Additional learning support

At Berry we have exceptional learning support processes that allow us to identify and provide intervention to students with Integrated Funding Support and unfunded students who require Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention.

Our identification process uses whole school assessment data, teacher observations, parent observations and Learning Support Team referrals. The learning and support teachers and classroom teachers create Individual Education Plans (IEPs) in collaboration with families and students. These IEPs are created to specifically meet the individual learning needs of each identified student and are delivered and evaluated by the learning and support teacher and school learning support officers (SLSOs).

Response to intervention - 3 tiers of support

Differentiation (Tier 1):

All staff engage in ongoing Professional Development on providing effective differentiation for students in all Key Learning Areas. Teachers access support from the learning support team to continue fostering a collaborative approach to meeting students at their level of need. Teachers are equipped with the knowledge to provide both physical and learning adjustments, and tailor learning experiences to give additional support or extension.

Support that fits your child's needs (Tier 2 and 3):

Some students need extra support to feel confident and do their best at school. We work closely with families and external healthcare providers to make support plans and adjustments  that suits each child’s needs.

Additional learning support can include:

  • teachers and support staff working together with families (and students, if needed)
  • specialist support for students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)
  • providing tailored programs to help high potential and gifted students with their advanced learning needs
  • small group tuition to provide targeted literacy and numeracy support for students

  • regular check-ins to review and update the planned supports

  • changes to the classrooms:

    • accessible classrooms
    • assistive technology
    • instructional resources
  • extra guidance, simpler content or different focus during lessons

  • assessment adjustments:

    • more time
    • simpler language
    • breaks during tasks
    • different ways to complete a task (e.g. oral presentations instead of written tasks).
We know a student needs help when:
  • teachers notice changes in learning or behaviour
  • reviewing assessment results and learning progress
  • parents and carers raise concerns or ask for support.

Adjustments are planned with parents and carers. They are reviewed regularly and changed when needed.  If you think your child may need extra help, contact us. You can also complete the Learning Support referral form available from the office or your child's classroom teacher.
