Gadhungal Murring is a community-based organisation that maintains strong partnerships with an array of schools in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions. The dedicated team is passionate about nurturing cultural understanding in schools by integrating local Indigenous knowledge and practices into the curriculum.
At Berry Public School we are fortunate to work closely with the Gadhungal Murring team. Through interactive sessions, students at Berry Public School engage with Gumea Dharawal traditions, language, and customs, fostering a deeper understanding and respect for the local indigenous culture. The interactive sessions facilitate interaction between students from different backgrounds, breaking down stereotypes and promoting cross-cultural understanding. These programs include activities such as music, dance, and games, enabling students to learn from one another and appreciate cultural diversity.
The Gadhungal Murring team places importance on language revitalisation and supports the teaching and preservation of the Dharawal language at Berry Public School. The team organise language sessions and provide resources to ensure the continuity of the Dharawal language.
The impact of the Gadhungal Murring group's efforts at Berry Public School has been significant, with students demonstrating increased cultural sensitivity and a stronger sense of belonging. The collaboration between the Gadhungal Murring team and Berry Public School has created an inclusive environment that values our local Indigenous heritage whilst promoting cultural diversity and understanding among our students.
