The students from both Berry Public School and Kangaroo Valley Public School got to engage with two outstanding children’s authors.
Firstly, K-2 heard all about the crazy antics of Nathan and his 4 brothers on their family farm in Yass! He told us all about his list of most terrifying animals:
1. Lambs … yep, lambs. Specifically his lamb called “Wooly Bully”!
2. Chickens! Specifically his evil chickens that used to chase everyone around.
And the worst of all….
3. BROTHERS!!! Specifically his brothers who would make up ridiculous games (like, “The Rock Game” and “The Stick Game”) and put him in the rubbish bin!
Then 3-6 got to hear about Maryam’s unbelievable life story, growing up in Australia as an Iranian refugee, not knowing how to speak English and seeking safety in the school library even though she was yet to learn how to read.
Maryam’s book “No Words” talks about her life through fiction. When she was talking about her life and her books you could hear a pin drop for the entire 50min session! It was phenomenal
She then hosted 16 very lucky Year 6 students for a writing workshop that they won’t soon forget. The hour went by WAY too quickly and the quality of writing from the students blew Maryam away!
Lastly, the biggest thank you to Berry Writers Festival for helping to fund this amazing and memorable event!
